Post Root Canal Treatment

Surgical Instructions from Dr. Bishop

Most endodontic procedures are completed using just local anesthesia. That means patients can drive to and from our office independently and return to work right away. If you experience any concerns following treatment, Dr. Bishop or one of her team members will be available to answer any questions you may have or provide emergency care right away. Follow the instructions below to avoid most major oral and overall health concerns following endodontic care:

  1. Continue to take all prescription medications unless otherwise instructed by Dr. Bishop or your physician. We will review your medications prior to treatment, and let you know in advance if there are concerns.
  2. Eat a full meal before treatment unless otherwise instructed, since you may be sore and find eating difficult following the surgery.
  3. In cases where patients suffer from, hip, knee, cardiac, and other prosthesis, or rheumatic heart disease, we’ll need to provide an antibiotic prior to the procedure to decrease patients’ risk for infection. Let Dr. Bishop know right away if you suffer from any of these conditions.
  4. Unless otherwise advised by your physician, we recommend taking over the counter pain relievers such as: Advil Liquid Gel capsules (ibuprofen) or Tylenol Rapid Release tablets (acetaminophen) to control discomfort during healing. About two hours prior to your endodontic procedures. This will help reduce inflammation and pain following treatment.

After Completion of Endodontic Treatment

Following endodontic treatment, your tooth, gums, jaw, and other oral and facial structures may be sore or tender. Throughout these treatments some mild swelling or tenderness should be considered completely normal. Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth where the endodontic treatment was performed, until your general dentist has placed a final dental crown or other restoration to strengthen and protect the tooth.

Continue to brush and floss as usual taking special care to be gentle around the treatment site. We recommend over the counter pain medications such as: Advil Liquid Gel capsules (ibuprofen) or Tylenol Rapid Release tablets (acetaminophen) take as directed to relieve discomfort. You may want to apply an ice pack at 20 minute intervals (20 on and 20 off) to reduce swelling, inflammation, and discomfort. If your discomfort is not adequately addressed with these pain relievers and ice packs, contact our office right away. One of our team members is always available to help.
